Overview

Ruling a vast empire which included a number of Germanic, Persian and Turkic peoples, Attila the Hun struck fear into the hearts of Romans in both the east and west.

After successes in the Balkans, he invaded Gaul, taking vast swathes of it, as well as Italy, where he laid waste to much of Northern Italy, causing such damage that peoples on the Adriatic fled to the lagoons for protection.

Yet when Attila died suddenly at the height of his powers (of internal bleeding, possibly caused by years of excessive drinking), the impressive Hunnic empire he had created quickly collapsed.

Join Dr Eireann Marshall to relive the brutal invasions that enabled Attila to build a vast empire from virtually nothing in under ten years, and made him one history's most controversial characters.
