Overview

Founded by Rome in the 1st century BCE as the Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, today the German city of Cologne is a magnificent maze of historical sites, and also boasts one of the most visited sights in Europe - the magnificent Cologne Cathedral.

In the Roman period, Cologne was one of the most important cities north of the Alps, largely because of its position on the Rhine, which made it a natural trading centre. This practice continued into the medieval period, when Cologne became a hub for Venetian trade.

The city's landscape is dominated by its world famous cathedral, which was constructed in the 13th century to house the relics of the 3 Magi, which were miraculously spared in the fierce bombing raids of the Second World War. Alongside the cathedral, the city is also famed for its twelve Romanesque churches, some of whose foundations date back to the Roman period.

Join Dr Eireann Marshall to take in the magnificent churches and wonderful Roman ruins that make Cologne one of the most attractive and historic cities in all of Germany.
