Overview

For centuries, the physical fabric of Edinburgh has been the setting for major events in Scottish history. From Edinburgh's ancient Castle, to the famous medieval cobblestoned Royal Mile - with its sloping closes, punctuated by abbeys, kirks and graveyards - and on to Holyrood House and Arthur’s Seat, every part of this extraordinary city tells a story.

Edinburgh began as a fortified town, emerging as the seat of Scottish Kings and finally a bustling capital. At its apex, Edinburgh was the battleground between Kingdoms – although overcrowding and industry led to its decline. Yet a New Town was built to reclaim its reputation for sophistication and culture.

The dramatic, dark, and at times violent history of Edinburgh has also given rise to its famous legends and folklore, including stories of ancient Celtic tribes, medieval kings and Jacobite rebellions, witch trials, plagues, body snatchers, and also the dubious nickname, “Auld Reekie”.

Join Dr Lauren Mackay to wind back the centuries of this fascinating city, and to explore Edinburgh's turbulent history and unique folklore which have forged its unique identity.
